MCT Oils are used by bodybuilders, powerlifters and other athletes due to the large presence of coconut oil found in MCT oils. MCT Oil stands for medium-chain triglycerides, which are chained fats, medium in length. They are popular because their shorter length makes them more digestible than other longer-chained fatty acids found in foods.
Where Does MCT Oil Come From?
The majority of MCT oils come from coconut oil, around 50% of the fat in coconut oils are made up of medium-chain triglycerides. There are four types of MCT’s:
- Caproic Acid (C6)
- Caprylic Acid (C8)
- Capric Acid (C10)
- Lauric Acid (C12).
Of the four different types of MCT’s, Caprylic acid & Capric acid are the most common fatty acids used in MCT Oils.
When using caprylic acid and capric acid, it is used for weight loss by increasing the sense of fulness and producing ketones. You also use Medium-Chain Triglycerides Oil to promote ketosis, in which the body uses fat as it’s an energy source and not carbohydrates.
Four different types of MCTs exist, of which caprylic and capric acid are most commonly used for MCT oil. In some cases, these specific types have unique benefits.
